Traders Joes Wintry Blend and Blueberry Waffles

Picked up some Traders Joes wintery blend last week. Have to say it may be the best drip coffee I've ever tasted (and I lived in Seattle)!

Paired it with some waffles, coconut oil spread, plain Greek yogurt, and fresh blueberries for a little late morning breakfast. Tastes like that old sugar cereal BooBerry - anyone remember that one?

Happy holidays to all the Nashville techies! Looking forward to a great 2011!

3 Reasons You SHOULD Create a Video Resume

SocialTimes ran a story recently on the idea of creating a video resume for your job search to stand out from the crowd. For an example, they used an amazing video resume done by Graeme Anthony. Anthony created his resume video to be completely interactive, using the YouTube video linking functionality to allow for links to other videos showing his prior work, skill sets, and other items that you would find on a normal resume.

Watch Anthony's Video Resume:

Each video he created is well done and unique and would easily impress potential employers. In fact, his video has received close to 50,000 views since being uploaded to YouTube and according to Anthony,

The response has been mind-blowing with offers of interest ranging from small start-up businesses all the way through to large multinational organizations.  I’ve received requests to go work abroad and some high-profile individuals have suggested that I start-up on my own which was extremely flattering.

Video is definitely becoming a prevalent form of communication due to the Internet making it increasingly easier to share videos. If you are currently seeking a job, a video resume can help give you the following advantages according to Jeremy Scott of ReelSEO:

1. Stand out from the crowd. 90% of all resumes have the same format–dry verbiage and bland, impersonal data.  Boo.  If yours is the only application for the position that included a link to a video resume, then what do you think the odds are that you set yourself apart from your competition?  I’d say they’re pretty darn good.  A small percentage of applicants have been getting unique with paper resumes, using witty copy, images, or even a creative layout or font choice.  Video is just a natural extension of that sort of thinking.  And in the current economic climate, it’s more important than ever to give yourself any advantage you can.
2. Show your personality. If you’ve ever been the hiring manager at any of your jobs, as I have, then you know that after the first handful of resumes or job applications, you eyes gloss over.  They all run together after a while, and you’re left with 50 pieces of paper that have no clear distinction among them.  Video shows a potential employer what you look like, sound like, and act like.  It’s almost like an initial screening interview.  Just like email can never reproduce the nuances of nonverbal communication or vocal inflection, a paper resume can only show employers a small portion of what you have to offer.  Video, however, can give a much clearer picture.
3. Demonstration. If you’re applying for a skill-based job, video gives you a chance to actively demonstrate your abilities.  A traditional resume only lets you brag about yourself.

How to Use Feedburner with the Share and Follow Widget on WordPress

Ok, so I finally got around to adding the email subscription service to the Nashville Tech blog page. Now you can sign up to receive email updates of new blog posts using the share and follow widget with a feedburner account.

Here is a quick walk through of how I did it...

One, I was already using the Share and Follow Widget available with WordPress. The Share and Follow widget gives you two main services, sharing buttons to allow people to share and like your blog posts, and a follow widget allowing people to easily subscribe to you on any network. The share functions are usually at the bottom of each page and post and the follow option can be a tab attached to the side of the blog (like on the NashvilleTech blog).

Here is an overview video of how to use the Share and Follow widget:

Next, I headed over to Feedburner to create the Feed account. I used my current MusikPitch Gmail account to set it up. If you don't have an account with Google, you will need to create one to create a Feedburner account (as Google owns Feedburner). Access Feedburner here.

After setting up a Feedburner account, you can "burn" a feed by pasting your RSS URL from your blog into where it says, burn a feed right this instance and click next.

You can find your RSS URL by right-clicking on the RSS button on your blog and copying the URL. Most blog RSS URLs are http://blogname.com/feed/

Go ahead and sign up for all the reporting functions as it is all free!

Once you get to the main dashboard, you'll see a tab that says Publicize. Click this tab and then look in the left column for the Email Subscriptions option.

Activate the email subscriptions option and find the email URL code inside the Preview subscription link box. Now you can paste the code from either box into a WordPress text widget to appear in the sidebar of your blog. I'm already using Mail Chimp for a newsletter and wanted to keep my blog update email subscription separate. So I went into Share and Follow and checked the mail icon to add that subscription option in my follow tab on the right side. Then I added the URL that I copied from the Preview Subscription link box from Feedburner as the goto address for when someone clicks on the mail icon inside the follow widget. I also added some custom text as I did with all my follow widgets.

Now when people click on the mail icon, they are taken to a page where they can sign up to receive new blog posts via email!

Any questions on the overall process? Do you think having a Mail Chimp subscription and blog email subscription is confusing?

$4.5 Million of TNInvesco Fund Given to Boston Based Company

Boston based company Shareable Ink is joining us in Nashville after receiving $4.5 million of the TNInvesco fund, led by the Tennessee Angel Fund, an initiative of the Nashville Capital Network.

This is a bit odd in the fact that TNInvesco funds were designed to increase the flow of capital to innovative new companies in Tennessee in the early stages of development.

This is also odd because according to the TNInvesco website, to receive TNInvesco funds,

The business must be headquartered in Tennessee; its principal business operations must be located in Tennessee, and at least 60% of its employees must be located in Tennessee.

I'm guessing this is why Shareable Ink is rushing to open a temporary office in Nashville this month and have more than 60 percent of staff in the city within 12 months.

On the brighter side, Shareable Ink says they are looking to hire local to fill some empty seats for developers, project managers, and customer support staff. I guess if Nashville entrepreneurs aren't getting the funding, at least they can be someone's secretary.

Corporate search, a.k.a. Google Search Appliance, Getting a Social Boost from Google

Looking to help companies regain about 25% of their work week through lost time searching company records and information, <a href="http://http://blogs.forbes.com/quentinhardy/2010/10/18/googles-new-view-of-business/?boxes=techchanneltopstories">Forbes</a> is reporting that Google is revamping it's corporate search functionality, or what they call the Google Search Appliance (sounds corporate).

The new features add to that search functionality the ability to also scan things in Google’s cloud-based Apps product, which includes word processing and spreadsheets, plus everything public on the Web, including information from Twitter and many blogs. There is also a “people search” feature, which supposedly makes it easier to find experts in a specific field. There are also more search modifying tools, and a connection into Microsoft’s Sharepoint product.

95% of Google's revenue still comes from public consumer search though keeping it important to ensure you get on Google with your blog, website, or product.

PR Success Story - A Press Release About A Press Release

So a few months ago, I sent out a press release about a success we had with MusikPitch and The Local Taco jingle. I really enjoyed writing the release which you can read here: Get a Jingle

Following the success of that release, PRWeb called to interview me about my experience using their service. I basically told them that I loved it :)  I had first read about using PRWeb for press releases in David Meerman Scott's book: The New Rules of Marketing and PR: How to Use Social Media, Blogs, News Releases, Online Video, and Viral Marketing to Reach Buyers Directly. A great read and highly recommended. I also read Made to Stick after the recommendation of a couple people including Nashville's top UX expert, Justin Davis.

I tailored my press released based on the recommendations of both books and got a tremendous response from the release. It was picked up by over 5,000 sources and had 107,610 impressions to date. See attached data sheet.

Overall it was a brilliant success and a lot of fun to watch the news spread.

PRWeb has written a great story about the effectiveness of that release here: PRWeb Helps MusikPitch Sing its Tune (which is a very nice looking blog by the way, well done guys). Which they then released across the wire and it was picked up by some big services to include Yahoo! News and the San Francisco Chronicle

So overall, I think the original release has paid for itself many times over.

Have you ever used a press release wire service? What was your experience?
